Most recent available data shows over 25 million U.S. business entities filing income tax returns - a figure that has been growing at a rate of around 2% annually. This includes self employed individuals such as 650,000 real estate agents, over 600,000 nannies, and close to 1 million direct sales ventures such as Amway and Mary Kay Cosmetics, as well as many part-time and hobby ventures. But similar to beauty, what constitutes a "business" is ultimately in the eyes of the beholder. Collectively, U.S. businesses entities posted over $ 20 trillion in annual revenue. Limited Liability Company's (LLC's) are clearly the preferred choice of entity for most new businesses.

Number of U.S. Businesses by Number of Employees
Only about 20% of business entities had employees, and these firms accounted for nearly 98% of total revenue - the 80% of businesses with no employees accounted for less than 2% of total US revenue. Firms with more than 500 employees represented less than ½ of one percent of all employer firms, but accounted for about 50% of total US employment.
